IDENTIFICATION Head Pores - Cephalic lateral canal with pores B',C,D,E,F,H' and posterior oculoscapular pores K',L'; preopercle canal with pores M',N,O' Scales - Naked except for two basicaudal scales with elongate cteni, scales easily lost. Scales are more noticeable in laval and juveniles than in the adults.

Fins - D1 - VII, spines not elongate; D2 - 12[12-13]; pectoral 18-19[17-2]; Anal 10[11-12]; Pelvic I,5 all rays branched, disk complete, ovate, reaching almost to anus;

Head - Rostral frenum absent; head moderately depressed; maxilla extending to under middle of eye; small protuberance in front of eye; interorbital slightly wider than eye diameter;

Papillae - A transverse pattern: Three vertical rows before the anterior of row b; row 5i/6i under the middle of row b and extending below the level of row d; first three vertical rows not extending below the level of row d.

Color - Body cross-barred with alternate lighter and darker bars, the lighter bars narrower than the darker, the 2 usually not sharply delimited, not entirely straight; a median row of dark spots strongly marked (Ginsburg 1933)

Distribution - Known from Wareham River, MA to Jacksonville, Florida

Habitat - Estuarine to higher salinities, habitat similar to Gobiosoma bosc but generally found in deeper waters of higher salinities.
