Fins - D1 - VII, none filamentous; D2 - 12[11-12]; pectoral ovate with 19[18-20] rays; anal fin 10[9-10]; caudal rounded with 16 segmented rays [few specimens counted]; pelvic I,5 complete disk, oblong to ovate, extending 3/4 distance to anus. Head - very small barbel near anterior nostril; Papillae - A transverse pattern with three vertical rows in front of row b, none extending below the level of row d; row 5s generally attached to the anterior of row b; row 5i/6i under row b near the anterior end of b; row d continuous; row 5i/6i extending below the level of row d. Color - Dimorphic in color; males uniformily dark grayish brown with a midlateral row of seven black spots between the pectoral base and the caudal, sometimes an eighth spot on the caudal base; belly pale; head mottled; a dark vertical area behind and above the corner of the mouth, a dark vertical line along the preopercular margin, and three dark spots along the course of the lateral canal; lips and chin dark; females are mottled and appear barred, the seven irregular bars passing through the seven black spots which are less distinct; seven dark areas along the base of the dorsal fins, each cirresponding with one of the bars and each usually consisting of two spots; the entire belly is pale.
