IDENTIFICATION: Short, stubby, eel-like , body height ~10% of standard length; gill opening tubular ; 2 rows of teeth on each jaw, conical outer row, chisel-like inner row; dorsal fin spines equal height and spacing; dorsal and anal fins united by low membrane with caudal fin. A new world, tropical to temperate genus with 5 species. Jordan & Gilbert 1882:332 [ref. 2471]. Fem. Cerdale ionthas Jordan & Gilbert 1882. Type by monotypy.
