A LIST OF THE VALID SPECIES OF GOBIOIDEI
by Edward O. Murdy

date -8 May 2006
The following list is my best guess at all the
valid species of Gobiidae, Eleotridae, Kraemeriidae, Microdesmidae, Odontobutidae, Ptereleotridae, Rhyacichthyidae, Schindleriidae, and Xenisthmidae currently recognized.
I wish to share this list with others interested in gobioid
taxonomy in order to obtain your input/comments.
I may have omitted some species and/or genera;
please let me know if I have(emurdy@nsf.gov). I relied largely
on the Catalog of Fishes augmented by recent literature and
my own knowledge of certain groups.
The list is color coded by subfamily and provides
genus, species, author, date, type locality, distribution by
region, and habitat. The 10 regions, based on Birdsong et al.,
1988, are as follows:
Region 1: Western Atlantic
Region 2: Eastern Atlantic south of Cape Verde
Region 3: Eastern Atlantic north of Cape Verde
Region 4: Indo-West Pacific including the Red
Sea, but excluding southern Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand.
Region 5: Eastern Pacific south of 25°N,
but including the Gulf of California
Region 6: Northwestern Pacific north of the
Ryukyu Islands and the Tropic of Cancer
Region 7: Pacific Plate as defined by Springer
1982
Region 8: northeastern Pacific north of 25°N,
but not including the Gulf of California
Region 9: Meditteranean basin and associated
drainages
Region 10: Southern Australia, Tasmania, and
New Zealand
